Excellent!
Segemoor, May 2022, ‘The Art of Quackery’
Excellent
I think if this had been a physical lecture it would have probably been rated outstanding. We have seen James before and he establishes a close rapport with a face to face audience, obviously not possible with zoom.
Stirling and Forth Valley Study Day, November 2021, ‘Medical Art from Pox and Pestilence to Medical Gold’
Excellent
A most enjoyable day.The speakers diction and delivery were excellent. The quiz at the end was inspirational. A new member commented, “it was a most interesting and topical. The speaker was well informed and his passion shone through. I look forward to the next study day.” Another commentated “Did I really want to learn about ‘Pox and Pestilence’ in the midst of Covid? Yes I did, outstanding.” Excellent speaker, humorous and knowledgeable.
Cheam AS Lecture, 19th November 2020, ‘Pox and Pestilence’
An excellent lecture!
James is a brilliant speaker with a very professional and relaxed delivery. He started with Cowpox, Small pox and went on to discuss Syphilis – called the Great Pox….. James showed some beautiful paintings depicting illness including AIDS. He also showed how we respond to fear of the unknown liability and disease.

Wensleydale AS Lecture, 10th March 2020 ‘Artists, Illness and Creativity’
A very good, interesting and challenging lecture. His choice of illustrative artists nicely varied and maybe not the obvious ones. His slides were good, his delivery clear and the talk well structured. He connected well with the audience. A compassionate exploration of a fascinating subject

How did you rate the lecture? Outstanding
James gave this lecture shortly after the Christchurch massacre which deeply affected all NZers. James was a GP at the time of the Dunblane massacres and in his practice worked with victim’s families. He commenced his lecture with a most sensitive, considered and empathetic reference to our recent event which touched the hearts of the audience. His lecture was outstanding and he finished it with a short reference to the Scottish tapestries featuring works in the New-Zealand section which was most fascinating. We received a lot of feedback saying his lecture was great and that he was such a lovely, special person.

I am writing immediately to say a very big “thank you” for a wonderful talk. I have not had so many people coming up to me to say just how much they ha£ enjoyed it. Your slides were really impressive and connected the art with the story.

On behalf of the Committee and The Arts Society membership in Wellington, thank you very much indeed for the fascinating lecture Medical Gold: from Ancient Egypt to the Nobel Prize that you gave us last week. You took us on an amazing, colourful journey as you explained the role and mystique of the precious metal in art and society with wit and insight – and your images were superb! Your stimulating lecture was thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by all members – indeed many said afterwards that it was one of the best ever. It was also a pleasure to have you and Christine with us in Wellington.
